


Miranda
Miranda is named from the British naval vessel which in November 1863, during the invasion of Waikato, opened fire on the Maori settlement of Pukorokoro in the Firth of Thames. The settlement of Miranda was later established at Pukorokoro.

Shorebird Centre
The Firth of Thames is an important site for waders or shorebirds, and is listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre is located only an hour from Auckland making it an excellent stop to escape the city and have a look at some of New Zealand’s amazing birdlife. With nearly half of the population of the endemic Wrybill found at PÅ«korokoro Miranda during part of the year, and with numbers of shorebirds often exceeding 10,000 the coastline is almost a mandatory stop for any birdwatcher passing by. Visit the Shorebird Centre and find out what birds are around. Even better, stay at the centre's accommodation.

Miranda Hot Springs
Make sure you bring your togs and towel and visit Miranda Hot Springs thermally heated fresh mineral water. Enjoy something to eat while you're here, using the coin-operated electric BBQs. There's a separate shop operating on site supplying hot food, ice-cream and confectionery. And for the kids there's a jumping pillow, adventure playground and games room. Nestled in 2 acres of picturesque grounds, Miranda Hot Springs is a perfect day out.
